Écrit à l’origine en assembleur 68000, les graphismes de The Pawn tirent parti de la résolution et des couleurs disponibles sur plate-formes 16 bits : ils révolutionnèrent le genre à sa sortie avec, notamment, une critique des plus favorables publiée dans Dragon Magazine (n° 114).
The Pawn bénéficie d’un analyseur syntaxique qui est l’un des plus aboutis (et des derniers) du genre, d’un scénario dans lequel l’étrange côtoie le fantastique et d’un packaging soigné, dans une grande boîte cartonnée illustrée en couleurs. Ce dernier comprend, outre l’indispensable manuel du jeu (constitué en fait d’une nouvelle, d’indices sur le jeu, et au verso d’une carte du monde de Kerovnia en couleurs), un livret de référence pour la machine (The Pawn Guide), un livret de référence des commandes (The Pawn Gameplay), et un poster dépliant en couleurs (reprenant l’illustration de la boîte).
Enfin, il faut signaler qu’une synthèse vocale assez réussie accompagne l’interpréteur dans certaines versions et permet (notamment sur Amiga) de se faire lire à haute voix l’ensemble des textes.

Set in the mythical world of Kerovnia, this amusing and complex tale is subtle enough to appeal to the beginner and hardened adventurer alike. A revolutionary text-handling system allows input of complicated sentences and complete interaction with characters (including some very intelligent animals!). The Pawn represents all its characters and objects as if they existed in a real world, storing complex information about their attributes and properties linked to their particular position or context in the game.
Your objectives are manyfold: The simplest is to escape from Kerovnia, but you will find others as you wader about the land and communicate with the characters you meet. The Pawn combines a rich text adventure, with stunning colour graphics, and a language parser that will set the standards for years to come.
